‘SUBALTERNISM’ IN THE GOD OF SMALL THINGS: AN APPRAISAL

Abstract
The current paper analyzes the caste consciousness in Arundhti Roy’s The God of Small Things in terms of its overlapping effect on human society. In this regard, the study attempts to explore how the caste or class system was established, what Hinduism says about caste system and how the sayings of Hindu scriptures were misused by the social masters. In addition, the study also investigated the relationship between the novel and the Hindu caste system. Roy minutely inspected all these social, political and cultural realities of her contemporary time. So, she focused on the societal quandaries related to ‘subalternism’ prevailing inside the human relationships among different classes in an impactful manner. The problem concerning caste system was depicted in Roy’s novel in a vivid manner. This paper considerably presents an analytical review on ‘subalternism’ in terms of caste with reference to Roy’s The God of Small Things.
